Description
North of Natchez tells a story of a Southern family caught up in the hard times of the Great Depression and the tumultuous events of World War II. Hatsdown Plantation, located ten miles north of Natchez, belonged to the Fortune family. The family’s main source of income, the Natchez Levee Construction Company, was suddenly lost when Clark Fortune had an onsite accident that left him a cripple; and he was forced to sell the company. Now, during the hard-scrabble years of the Great Depression, Hatsdown had to support them—or all would be lost! Who would have thought that it would fall to Bart Fortune, just out of high school, to save the plantation? But, he had an ace in the hole—he would have the help of his friend, Rad Hammer. Years earlier, Bart, almost five years old, lost both parents in a car wreck. Although physically impaired, Grandfather Clark assumed Bart’s care. He hired Louise Hammer, his part-time Negro cook, to be his housekeeper paying special attention to his grandson’s needs. Her nine year old son, Rad, was to be Bart’s friend and companion. With the odds lined up against them, the two inexperienced young men seized the initiative and devised a bold solution for Hatsdown. For America and the people at Hatsdown, World War II caused great personal, economic and social change. Bart and Rad served their country in the military during the war, each making a unique contribution. Both men found the love of wonderful caring women. Readers that value the institution of marriage and a functional family will find encouragement from the individuals in this story as they fought for survival—and learned some of the answers to life’s most serious questions.
